When trainee doctors are bullied!

aggressive doctorGeneral Medical Council a an independent organisation that helps to protect patients and improve medical education and practice across the UK have identified factors that can contribute to doctors in training feeling bullied or undermined. These was highlight in the organisation current press release which were finding derived from sample taken from 12 United Kingdom hospitals.

Factors identified in the exercise and stated in the release include feeling undervalued by their employers after being overlooked or criticised for their work or lack of knowledge
being caught in the middle of arguments because of a lack of leadership or cohesion among senior doctors,a belief that when overworked, senior doctors did not have time to focus on the education and training of doctors in training,the difficulty in raising concerns to senior doctors. 

The definitions accepted by the for Undermining is behaviour that subverts, weakens or wears away confidence. while Bullying is behaviour that hurts or frightens someone who is less powerful, often forcing them to do something they do not want to do.

They also found some senior doctors were shocked to hear that bullying and undermining was happening at their hospitals.

Previous finding by the organisation have found that 8% of doctors in training reported experiencing bullying or harassment themselves, while nearly 14% reported having witnessed someone else suffering these behaviours. And 18% had experienced undermining. In addition Obstetric and Gynecology, and surgery were specialties with most cases of bully and undermining!

GMC is a fee-based registered UK charity  that maintain register of doctors eligible to practice in the country.
