500 years of history have not changed the core concept of what resume is suppose to be- a personal marketing tool. It is a document used by an individual to present their background and skills. These would include basic bio-data, education and job experience.
Usually a resume is use with a cover letter or application letter when seeking employment.
A resume is at least one or two A 4 size depending on the level of experience and achievement. Tailoring to the employer requirement is now becoming popular.Usually what a hiring officer looks for in your resume is if your skills and experience match the vacancy most especially the documentation of your employment history and qualification.

A Human Resource(HR) expert or Resume Manager can help to fine tune a resume.However there various styles used in writing a good resume. Usually the top has your name, contact(Phone number, e-mail, and physical address), objectives and summary of qualifications and work & employment history).
The employment history can be in reverse chronological order where the listing start from the current employment and the other in reverse order.The other is functional resume where you classify your work experience based on area of competence and capacity. However there format which combine the feature of both.
You must note also that resume are generally shorter(1-2 pages) than Curriculum vitae(CV). The length is a major difference between the two.Resume include only the summary of your skills, education and experience while CV is more wholesome by also including your publication,research,awards,honor, academic background etc.
Note that different employers have different expectation, so know the one your potential employer want- a CV or a resume. Generally an organisation with American background except an academic research position may expect a resume while a British or her Commonwealth countries may expect a CV.
Rules of Paper resume
- Keep it neat! It is your first impression with new potential employer.Avoid ink smog or dogged haired paper. Use at least 80 grams paper.
- Be honest with what you write , remember your potential employer may do a background check.
- There is no harm getting a good resume professional to write one for you.
- Avoid grammatical mistake
- Know enough of the organisation you are submitting your resume to, so also the job description of what you are applying for.
- Use action to describe your achievement in the resume!
It must be noted that an online resume make all these hassle unnecessary. The internet may save you from paper resume. Online employer vacancy electronic portal would still need some etiquette of good paper resume like ensuring good grammar and sincerity of information.
