BOOK REVIEW: Recipe for Successful Residency Training

BOOK REVIEW: Recipe for Successful Residency Training
Pages: 41
Year of Publication: 2012
Author: Mohammed Bukar

Recipe for Successful Residency TrainingSir Tom Stoppard, a renowned British Playwright said “Every ceiling, when reached, becomes a floor upon which one walks…” Residency training for a doctor is another floor which an erstwhile medical student who is now a doctor walks as a resident. Residency training for a doctor is a pursuit along a career path with a very important landmark of being a certified specialist.

It is necessary before any endevour to be guided. The book: Recipe for successful residency training is meant to do that for an intending Resident Doctors and those already on the Residency training program.

Residency programs globally and in recent times have increased in competitiveness, duration, and level of strain and stress . A written guide would definitely not be out of place.

The book is concise, insightful and touch every essential aspect a resident would need to know. The arrangement into sequential sections gives the book a deep sense of organization. It is easy to read and not unenjoyable especially with the rich philosophical slant and ingrained copious notable quotes of other great minds. Interesting, it dwelled on pre-residency, residency, post residency stages.

The book has strength in being concise and  not lacking in originality. It is however written in the background of the Nigerian Residency programs although the West African Postgraduate College program is shared by other West African Countries.

It is a book that would give a general guide to a resident, non technical part inclusive i.e when it is best to write the primary examination, how to choose specialty, how to tackle the examination-Primary, Part One and Part Two, going about Post Part One dissertation and even note of encouragement regarding publishing as a Post Fellowship Resident.

N.B-The book was picked for review, based on our in-house policy and its relevance to JOB FOR DOCTORS readers
