Postgraduate Medical Research Scholarships in UK 2015

There are top United Kingdom Universities who has Postgraduate Research Scholarship openings for non-EU/Non-UK(Developing countries inclusive). Quite a number can be filled by medically qualified individual with additional qualifications depending on institutional specifications.

IRIDICA: A change to diagnostics!

Could the new IRIDICA, a cutting edge pathogen identification technology  developed by Abbot Laboratories revolutionize diagnostics and change the turnaround time and accuracy of patient care? Evidence suggests that.The new testing platform has capacity to diagnose multiple arrays of organisms eliminating need for blood culture to determine organisms and the detection of multiple organisms in just one blood sample.

IRIDICA means laboratory result for microbial detection could be gotten in one shift (at least 8 hours) by extraction of microbial nucleic acid from all sample types, including blood and tissue thus being able detect  more than 700 bacterial and Candida species,  about 200 moulds and yeasts and 130 viral species from 13 reporting groups. It would also be able to detect antimicrobial resistance.

 IRIDICA uses Polymerase Chain Reaction/Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (PCR/ESI-MS) which makes a very fast diagnostic modality compare to present system where Clinicians have to wait for days to know the specific infectious organism based on culture.

This hold promise to revolutionizing how sepsis and severe infections are manage by clinicians who have to wait for prolong turnaround  time for specific  organisms implicated in cases to be unraveled in the laboratories. In addition aid better antimicrobial prescription.

IRIDICA after 15 years in development is now available in Europe and CE-Mark recognized countries after approval by CE-Mark(FDA equivalent)  making it a very important tools in hands of physicians to manage infectious diseases.

Abbot Laboraties is an American pharmaceuticals and health care products company headquartered in Abbott Park, North Chicago, Illinois. She has track record of legendary discoveries e.g. first HIV blood-screening test.

Tribute to Father of Dental Implantology

Per-Ingvar Brånemark, an orthopedic surgeon who is acclaimed to the father of dental
implantology dead on December 20th , 2014 . He is a Swedish Research Professor born on May 3, 1929.

He presented is landmark work in 1982 in Toronto an invention of Titanium fixture and anchoring device for implants. This osseo-integration technique revolutionize implant dental practice which prior to that time was not too easy or too successful. Patients with tooth loss would not be able to chew and replacement were not too pleasant.

He was awarded with multiple honorary degrees, Swedish Society of Medicine's Soederberg Prize('mini-Nobel') in 1992 and European Inventor Award 2011, and there more 8 million people who have benefited from his invention which is a standard method in dental implantology.

What you need to know about resume

500 years of history have not changed the core concept of what resume is suppose to be- a personal marketing tool. It is a document used by an  individual to present their background and skills. These would include basic bio-data, education and job experience.

Usually a resume is use with a cover letter or application letter when seeking employment.
A resume is at least one or two A 4 size depending on the level of experience and achievement. Tailoring to the employer requirement is now becoming popular.Usually what a hiring officer looks for in your resume is if your skills and experience match the vacancy most especially the documentation of your employment history and qualification.

A Human Resource(HR) expert or Resume Manager can help to fine tune a resume.However there various styles used in writing a good resume. Usually the top has your name, contact(Phone number, e-mail, and physical address), objectives and summary of qualifications and work & employment history).

The employment history can be in reverse chronological order where the listing start from the current employment and the other in reverse order.The other is functional resume where you classify your work experience based on area of competence and capacity. However there format which combine the feature of both.

You must note also that resume are generally shorter(1-2 pages) than Curriculum vitae(CV). The length is a major difference between the two.Resume include only the summary of your skills, education and experience while CV is more wholesome by also including your publication,research,awards,honor, academic  background etc.

Note that different employers have different expectation, so know the one your potential employer want- a CV or a resume. Generally an organisation with American background except an academic research position may expect a resume while a British or her Commonwealth countries may expect a CV.

Rules of Paper resume
  1. Keep it neat! It is your first impression with new potential employer.Avoid ink smog or dogged haired paper. Use at least 80 grams paper.
  2. Be honest with what you write , remember your potential employer may do a background check.
  3. There is no harm getting a good resume professional to write one for you.
  4. Avoid grammatical mistake
  5. Know enough of the organisation you are submitting your resume to, so also the job description of what you are applying for.
  6. Use action to describe your achievement in the resume!

It must be noted that an online resume make all these hassle unnecessary. The internet may save you from paper resume. Online employer vacancy electronic portal would still need some etiquette of good paper resume like ensuring good grammar and sincerity of information.
