How many years in your Med School, Where do you stand?

Different countries have different years spent in training of medical students. The duration is determine by tradition,policies,regulation and law  of different countries.

 Generally, Medical schools post qualification awards also varies, and it may be Doctor of Medicine (MD), or Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS, MBBS, MBChB). The variation in years have nothing to do with quality since usually practitioners have morally obligation to train trainee to acceptable minimally  global standard. Note that the years below does not include internship year(s). We thought it is fun if our readers in various part of the world knows the difference.

Words for Doctors' Work and World

Medic/Medico- Informal way of referring to a doctor(American English). It is also an informal way of referring to a Medical Student(British English)

House Officer-also House Physician , House Surgeon or Medical Intern.This is the lowest cadre of doctors. In British Commonwealth countries it is use for a pre-registration doctors.

Medicine- derived from Latin word - ars medicina which means  the art of healing. It is science,art or both of healing. Medicine can be traced to Prehistoric age of man.

Surgery- derived from Latin word- chirurgiae which means hand work. it is a medical specialty that uses operative procedure and instrumented techniques to investigate or treat a patient disease condition.

Doctor- derived from Latin word- Docere which means to teach. In the Medical field it is mostly awarded to those who have bagged a degree in Medicine & Surgery,Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine.

Hospital- derived from Latin word hospitale which means guest house. it is usually a place where patient health is catered for by specialised staff and equipment. The first documented example of what could be described as hospital were ancient Egyptian temples.

Registrar- A medical doctor in a stage of graduate medical training leading to specialization.

Grants for Postgraduate Career Development

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) a pan-African research institution headquartered in Nairobi, in partnership with the International development Research Centre (IDRC), has announced the 2015 African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowships. The Program, eighth in series is meant for doctoral students with strong commitment to a career in training and/or research. The applicant to the program must be citizens or permanent residents of a sub-Saharan African country among others. Award to each doctoral student is to the maximum of  US$10,000.
